LEARNING AI

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new things, because we are curious… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

I’m not going to lie, as an artist, in this day and age, it’s scary knowing what AI is already capable of — but it doesn’t have to be.

AI is still a very controversial topic, especially in the art community. There are topics I agree and disagree on when it comes to this, but in the end, AI is not going away — we have to learn how to use it to our advantage.

I am fortunate to have taken one of Ringling College’s VERY FIRST AI class! Here I have been learning different AI programs, techniques, and processes for art while learning to use the programs proficiently and effectively.

Many know this about me, and if there is anything I hope you have taken away from your time here — I always want to keep learning

I would love to show you what I have learned so far!

PROJECTS

THEMED GRIDS

  • Create four sets of nine images in Midjourney that each center around a common theme. Practice using the many parameters to get creative but consistently themed results. The image sets may all be done in a different style but the style within each set should be consistent.

  • Set One: Create a series of 9 images of cooked dishes from a fictional cooking show. Be creative in your theme, these dishes do not need to be based on a real world foods.

Set Two: Create a series of 9 images. Each image should depict an animal or creature. All images should be done in the same style and live in the same biome (snowy mountains, desert, jungle etc.)

Set Three: Create a series of 9 architectural images. The architecture should be unique but the style and materials of all 9 images should be consistent.

Set Four: Create a series of 9 photorealistic images. These images should be photojournalistic and tell a simple visual story.

TEXTURES, PATTERNS, AND LOGOS

  • Create your own products and packaging for them. Make three packages for invented products. Text and texture application work will be done in Photoshop or similar.

  • 2 original packages for different products. Each package should have a repeating background pattern, a logo and text.

STABLE DIFFUSION

  • Learn how to turn your paintings, thumbnails and sketches into more finished artwork. Create three images using slightly different techniques

    • For the first image you’ll be photo-bashing/collaging to create an original composition then using SD image to image to give it a clear and consistent illustrative look. The theme for the assignment is Wild West.

    • The second image will be based on either a loose digital painting or a 3D block-in that we’ll work on in class. Once you have a finished composition we’ll replace the layers one by one using SD image to image to get a more polished illustrative look.

    • Use older unfinished work and clean it up - put samples of your work into SD image to image

REPLACE & REFINE

  • Learn stable diffusion and image to image in Leonardo and how to keep your character design while changing certain items.

  • One: Create an original character in Stable Diffusion or Midjourney. Once you have a character you like use Stable Diffusion Inpainting to replace certain items of their clothing, such as their jacket or pants, while leaving the rest of the character unchanged.

Part Two: Create a new character or use the same character as in part one. Use outpainting in Stable Diffusion to zoom out of the image and change the background environment.

Part Three: Use Midjourney or Stable Diffusion to make a portrait of an original character. Now give the character different accessories, such as different hairstyles, earrings, eyeware etc.
